Materials and care
Our products are crafted from premium 3mm thick Corten steel (also known as weathering steel). Celebrated by architects and landscape designers alike, Corten is engineered to eliminate the need for painting. Instead, it forms a stable, protective, rust-like appearance when exposed to the elements.
At 3mm thick, this material strikes the perfect balance between high-end structural durability and sleek, modern design. It won't crack, warp, or rot, making it a lifetime investment for your space.
The Evolution: Watching Your Steel Mature
When your Corten steel item arrives, it may be in its un-weathered state—sporting a dark blue/grey, raw steel finish. The magic happens when you introduce it to the elements.
- The Transition: Over a period of 3 to 9 months, exposure to rain, sun, and humidity will cause the steel to develop its signature warm, copper-and-amber patina.
- The Shield: This striking rust layer isn’t a sign of degradation. It is actually a dense protective barrier that seals the core steel, stopping the deep corrosion that ruins standard mild steel.
- A Unique Finish: No two pieces weather identically. Your product’s final texture and hue will be completely unique to your local climate and positioning.
Care & Maintenance
Corten steel is loved precisely because it is virtually maintenance-free. You never need to paint, oil, or seal it. However, to get the best out of your piece, keep these two factors in mind:
1. Managing Rust Runoff (The Weathering Phase)
During the initial months of the weathering process, rainwater will wash loose iron oxide off the product. This can cause temporary rust staining on porous surfaces below it, such as concrete, light-colored stone, pavers, or wood decking.
- The Fix: Position your item on soil, gravel, or a protective mat until the patina has fully stabilized. Once the steel is cured, runoff is minimal to non-existent.
- Clean Up: If staining does occur on nearby pavers, it can usually be removed with a commercial rust remover or a power washer.
2. Drainage & Air Flow
While Corten loves the outdoors, it thrives on a natural "wet and dry" cycle.
- Ensure that any planter boxes or outdoor features have adequate drainage so the steel isn't permanently submerged in stagnant water.
- Periodic dry spells are what allow the protective oxide layer to harden and seal properly.
A Note on Longevity: Because we use a heavy-duty 3mm gauge, your Corten steel piece is built to withstand decades of harsh weather. Sit back, relax, and watch your product beautifully adapt to the natural rhythm of your environment.
